PRESENTATION AT A HIGH-LEVEL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

The COMPOSE toolbox was promoted at the scientific conference of the Chambers Group for the Development of Greek Isles (EOAEN) by the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems Laboratory, Technical University of Crete (ReSEL-TUC). The conference took place in Piraeus-Greece, on 11-13 November 2021, under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, the Region of Attica, and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, and with the scientific support of 12 Greek Universities.

The conference works attended more than 300 participants (physically and through live web streaming), and involved more than 60 speakers from the scientific community, central and regional administration, social partners, acknowledged institutions of economics and entrepreneurship, and the 21 island Chambers of the country demonstrated the need for solidarity and cooperation on a common axis of action and objectives, in order to achieve the best possible result for the sustainable development of the island communities, entrepreneurship and competitive economy. Amongst them the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy - Giannis Plakiotakis, the Deputy Minister of Development & Investment - Nikos Papathanasis, the General Secretary of the Aegean & Island Policy -Manolis Koutoulakis. INSULEUR, our COMPOSE PLUS partner, was also represented by its President, Joseph Borg.

One of the main topics of the conference was the necessity of promoting sustainable energy in order to address climate change and insularity challenges and achieve sustainable development at the Greek islands. In this frame, Professor Theocharis Tsoutsos (Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems Laboratory, Technical University of Crete), moderator of the session ‘’Environment and sustainable development, utilisation of green and circular economy’’, analysed the COMPOSE Model, as a best practice, especially for insular societies to build on energy communities and to foster efficient implementation local energy plans by exploiting the local potential. He also underlined that this has been already demonstrated in real projects, co-created with local stakeholders and communities, in 11 Mediterranean countries under the Interreg-MED program.

Mrs. Evangelia Dialyna, PhD candidate,  presented the COMPOSE toolbox and explained how it can support policymakers and development planners in implementing their sustainable energy projects.

The presentation of the COMPOSE model and Toolbox, at this high-level event, proved a great opportunity for transferring the COMPOSE model to a wide targeted audience of policy actors, decision-makers, investors and entrepreneurs.
